“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)

Written by Brennan Elming from Lectio Divina Bible Fellowship Club

We are reminded in this passage that it truly is not easy to be a disciple of Jesus. To deny oneself is to give up the pride or plans that you hold for yourself, and accept the mission that Christ has entrusted to you. To “take up your cross” is not to take the easy way out. To take up our crosses means that we, like Christ, must embrace the suffering of this world for the sake of the Kingdom of God and find joy in Christ while doing so. It is also crucial that we pray constantly that we may know God’s will for our lives and deny our own personal will. Lastly, in this quotation Jesus calls us to follow him. This does not just mean to follow him in prayer or in certain actions, but in all aspects of being a disciple. Jesus calls us so that he can transform our lives, so that we can live out our maximum potential as His followers. After all, Christ never promised the journey would be easy- but that the reward after this life would be an eternal reward.
